Purpose and Aims of the Association

The objectives of the Maritime Information Association are:
-to promote contact and co-operation between people interested in maritime matters and maritime history including maritime historians, researchers, archivists, information officers and librarian.
-to develop a body of professional expertise relevant to the literature and information sources in maritime activities.

Activities: The association was formed, as the Marine Librarian’s Association, at a conference held at Garnet College, London, in 1972, and the annual conference has remained the main event of the Association. It is normally held in Autumn and, although most of the early conferences were held in London, more recently a variety of venues have been favoured including Plymouth, Copenhagen, Chatham and Newcastle. The conference includes a program of lectures and visits, and also the annual general meeting of the Association. It also provides ample opportunity for the establishment and renewal of informal contacts, and for the discussion of mutual interests and problems, these being some of the important functions of the Association. Lectures given at the conference have included various aspects of nautical education, marine safety, maritime law, navigation, containerisation, surveying, naval architecture and, of course, regular coverage of nautical publications, the maritime press and relevant areas of library and information services.

Publications: The MIA Newsletter is issued periodically throughout the year , with articles, news items, and members contributions. A List of Members is revised annually and acts as a useful directory of those active in the marine information field.
